Brecknock celebrated World Book Day last Friday with a vast variety of extraordinary characters attending school!
Even the teachers were replaced by some very odd characters indeed. Well done to all the children and thank you parents for helping with fantastic costumes!

See the showcase page for the list of winners in the Book Review Competition!
On Friday 12th February, Brecknock celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Tiger. We invited Ling, a one-time member of the Chinese State Circus to entertain us with foot juggling, the Diablo, dancing and a Magic Show. She absolutely mesmerised us all with her performance!
“She was good. She did lots of acrobatics and foot juggling. I really enjoyed it. She taught a us a lot about Chinese New Year,” said Mohamed Sharif in 5T.
“She had good dancing skills. I liked the magic trick when she poured water from a newspaper!” said Sahar Wali also in 5T.
Each class then participated in Chinese New Year Activities. Nursery made Chinese noodles and masks, Reception learnt Chinese writing and Years 1 and 2 made animal masks to re-enact the story of Chinese New Year. Years 3 and 4 were taught Mandarin by two pupils from Malaysia thanks to Yvonne Ong 6EM and Veron Ong 3O. Years 5 and 6 made very impressive slideshows about China which we watched during the Assembly.
At lunchtime, we were treated to a delicious Chinese school meal complete with fortune cookies! Everyone really enjoyed the day.
We celebrated European Day of Languages on 26th September 2009 by holding a Languages Week at Brecknock. Parents and visitors helped provide activities for every year group. These included taster sessions in Spanish, Somali, Welsh, Turkish and Albanian, Greek Dancing, and an Italian Afternoon. The week was rounded off by a special assembly where each year group spoke about what they had learnt.

The Brecknock Community Festival took place on Friday 3rd July and was a great success. Lots of parents and staff helped out to make the afternoon a roaring success. Everyone had a great time. There was all the usual stalls, entertainment and food on offer. The expected rain never materialised and all went without a hitch. Another successful year with Siobhan, as always, an organisational rock! If you missed it play the slideshow below for a flavour of what was on offer and watch the film clip of the incredibly talented dancing teachers!
This year saw the first Brecknock Sports day for key stage 2 take place at the running track at Parliament Hill. The day was a roaring success and many thanks must go to Joe in Year 4 for his incredible organisational job that helped make the day a huge success. The weather was glorious and the children were a credit to us all with their enthusiasm and vocal support of each other. The Celts won the points prize with the Romans taking home the fair play award.
Keystage 1 were also blessed with beautiful weather for their sports day at the astorturf on Market Road. Another excellent organisational job by Joe meant the day ran smoothly. The victorious team in Key Stage 1 were the Celts winning the points prize and the Greeks won the Fair Play award.
In May children from Year 5, along with Anna, Siobhan and Sue travelled to Poznan in Poland to meet up with children and staff from the other schools invovled in the Comenius Project. They spent a week in Poland being shown around and having a great time. Below is a slideshow of some of the things they got up to. For more information on the Comenius project click here.
Brecknock School Council took part in the 10th Annual Primary School Debates on March 5th 2009. (Unfortunately there were only enough places for the School Councillors from Year 3 to Year 6 to go.) Everything took place in front of Councillor Nural Islam, The Mayor of Camden, who wore his official gold chain throughout the proceedings.
We arrived at the Town Hall opposite St Pancreas station and after a short wait were ushered into the council chambers. They were very impressive, a large room full of bench seats with microphones in front of each seat. The microphones were a big hit with all the children.
Our school was the last to speak. Our two council members who had been feeling rather nervous seemed to get much calmer as the moment neared for them to speak.
We had already had lots of chance to ask the other schools questions about their topics and what they were doing in their school, so our microphone technique was excellent. Sarah (year 6) and Kieron (year 4) took turns to explain that “Brecknock believes that all Primary school children should have two hours of PE, in school, every week.” They explained the many benefits for children now and as adults in the future, as well as the consequences of not doing enough PE in school, both now and in the future.
After Nabil (year 5) cleared up some schools mistake that is was not two hours a day, but two hours over a week, all the other schools asked questions which were answered by all the members of school council.
It was a fascinating morning, giving school council an insight into how Camden Council works as well as considering a variety of topics that children think would make the lives of
On Friday 13th February 2009, Year 4 visited the Imagine Children's Literature Festival, at the Southbank Centre, which brings together some of the best contemporary children's writers, storytellers and illustrators for readings, discussions and workshops.
During the day, a group of pupils participated in the Bibliomancer's Dream at the Royal Festival Hall. This was a circular library holding over four thousand books. Bibliomancy is an ancient ritual that involved randomly choosing a book and then picking a line or verse to learn a truth or inspire your imagination.
Children were photographed at the exhibition by The Camden Gazette and also appeared in British Satellite News.
Pupils then listened to Carol Ann Duffy recite poems and extracts from her latest book, "The Princess' Blankets".

This years Valentines disco was a great success with £265 being raised to go towards new playground equipment. Many thanks to everyone who donated food and time to make the night memorable.
Our children did themselves proud with their acting and singing abilities again this year in the Year 1 and 2 Christmas shows. Everyone enjoyed them and a huge well done must go to all the children as well as a huge thankyou to all those who helped with practices, costumes, make-up and set design.
Thursday the 27th saw the long awaited opening ceremony of our new and improved roof playground. The builders have been working long and hard since work started in the summer holidays. The school council were heavily involved with the planning process and deciding what it would look like. On Thursday Channel 4's Jon Snow, our associate governor, came to preside over the opening ceremony. The weather was kind to us with the sun coming out briefly from behind the clouds. All the children were on the roof and a number of parents came along. They were treated to some lovely singing by our year 3 and 4 classes (thanks to Sara for organising them to sing so beautifully) as well as a demonstration on the roofs star attraction, the new trampoline, by Dean in year 6. The children can't wait to get up there and enjoy their new space.
The 6th November saw another successful 'Family Supper'. This years entertainment was from a 'Gum Boot' dancer from South Africa and the Year 4 children he worked with did themselves proud on the night with some great dancing and singing. The food was, as usual, outstanding with food from all over the world represented (Spain, Eritrea, Somalia, England, Turkey, England, Scotland, Wales to name just a few). Below are some photos taken on the night. If you missed it this year, make sure and come along next year. Thanks must go to all the parents and staff who gave up time to prepare and provide food and help to make the night a success, with an extra special thanks to Siobhan for again co-ordinating a great night.

As part of the many celebrations that took place for 'Black history Month' class 5W wrote and performed a very moving assembly about Martin Luther King and the Black Civil Rights movement started in American in the 1960's. They used acting as well as computer images and multimedia clips from YouTube (expertly operated by 5W's very own Ahmed). Below are some photographs taken during the assembly. They are currently in the process of producing a filmed version as an extra media project with Rod in the media room. Many people present at the assembly commented that the chldren's performance moved them to the verge of tears. As soon as the video is finished a link will be placed here for you to see for yourself.

At Brecknock we believe one of the great things about our school is the diversity - we have children and staff from all over the world. We try and celebrate as many different cultures and festivals as we can. This year we had a very special Friday tea to celebrate the Muslim Festival of Eid. Many of the children made Eid cards and a number of parents came along and provided lots of amazing food and drinks for the party after school. Everyone who came along had a great time and the food was incredible! Thanks to all the parents for making this such a successful afternoon and hopefully it was just the first of many Eid teas we wil hold at Brecknock over the next few years.

Brecknock was lucky enough to have a visit from Rebecca Wing on the 2nd of October. Rebecca represented the United Kingdom at the recent Beijing Olympics. She was here as part of a drive to get children exercising. The children (and even some of the staff!) did a sponsored exercise circuit to raise money for charity and the school before Rebecca gave us a demonstration of some gymnastic skills. Rebecca did all sorts of flips and tumbles as you can see from the photos below it was all very impressive.
It was an amazing opportunity for the children to see what can be accomplished with lots of hard work and determination. The children did fantastically well with their money raising efforts with class 5W winning the trophy for the most money raised by a class. Well done everyone for taking part and especially to 5W.

This years celebration of achievement was again an inspiring night. Our children and their families were a credit to us and it was wonderful to see the families all there to support their children. Well done to Asma, Flaka and Ramlah. Brecknock is proud of you. There is more information and a lovely picture of our three winners together on the showcase page.

As part of our fundraising effort for Sport Relief we held a sport relief mile run on the roof playground. Every class took part and despite the grey day we were lucky with the weather as the rain held off long enough to get through everyone. These are some pictures of the year 3 doing their bit to raise money. Well done to everyone who took part.
To celebrate the Chinese New Year we had a very special lunch. The dinner ladies and the cook prepared for us a special lunch with a Chinese twist. We had chow mein noodles, sweet and sour chicken and vegetable stir fry to choose from. The food was great! Different classes had prepared decorations for the dinner hall including Chinese dragons and lanterns. The dinner ladies even dressed up in traditional Chinese hats to serve us our food!
